Dear AFRISOS Friends,

We have got some exciting updates for you, and also a little surprise, keep reading to discover it! 

Over the last two months, we’ve taken some of our mentees on amazing adventures, capturing the essence of African landscapes and cultures. We’ve been exploring around: from the Okavango Delta in Botswana to the Yaeda Valley in Tanzania, there has been no shortage of excitement. We’ve been working with different communities around Africa. And now we want to share that with you!

AFRISOS Expedition Filmmaking Workshop.

In July, AFRISOS, in partnership with the Great Spine of Africa, hosted a filmmaking workshop to explore the beauty of the Okavango Delta, and we can already tell that this 10-day workshop was a huge success. 

We received applications from all around Africa, and we selected five talented mentees: Eric Averdung-Kenya, Janado Cher-Mozambique; Luyanda Shabalala-South Africa, Nelson Mboya-Tanzania, and Tumi Sejoe-Botswana. They had an intense experience, from driving a Mekoro (traditional dugout canoe) to exploring the river and the community living around it.  With the guidance of our expert mentors, Jigar Ganatra, Johann Vorster, and Tebogo Phalane, the mentees learned about filmmaking, storytelling, editing, and scientific expeditions and ended up bringing to life five remarkable short films, shot and edited in just six days!

Community Photography Training - Hadzabe.

As we moved into August, our team traveled to the northern part of Tanzania to launch an exciting 8-day photography training program with the Hadzabe community in Domanga. They were mentored by our in-house filmmakers, Emmanuel Mollel and Nelson Mboya, and learned everything from camera handling and exposure to composition and storytelling.

But this wasn't just about learning photography. It was about empowering the Hadzabe community to tell their own stories and share their unique perspectives with the world. At the end of the program, the mentees proudly presented their photo stories to the community, showcasing their newfound skills and the beautiful narratives they had created.

Are you wondering where our next adventure will take us? If you liked the vibe of the Expedition Filmmaking Workshop but feel deeply connected with the natural and cultural heritage of Tanzania, this information might interest you:

AFRISOS, with the support of the Hadzabe Community and the Great Spine of Africa, is organizing a filmmaking workshop in the Yaeda Valley, Tanzania, between the 19th - 29th of October, and maybe you can even come with us!  

The selected filmmakers will be working side by side with Hadzabe community members, and learning how to tell a compelling cultural story through video. This all-expenses-paid program will be open for international applicants but prioritize Tanzanian citizens. Applications are closing soon.

Also, if you want to be part of our team, we have a job opening for you! We're seeking a passionate and experienced leader to oversee our storytelling programs. As Executive Director, you'll work closely with our Chairman to develop and implement strategies that empower communities to share their unique narratives. Your role will involve fundraising, program management, community engagement, and ensuring operational excellence.
