Dear AFRISOS friend, 

June was an incredible month and if you were at Wildscreen Festival Tanzania, you must’ve felt it too! If you weren’t, keep reading because we’re going to tell you all about what was described as a once-in-a-lifetime experience. 

Earlier last month, we partnered with Wildscreen and the BBC Natural History Studios to bring  200+ conservationists, filmmakers and community members together to delve into the world of natural history storytelling. From impact assessments, to securing funding, mastering showreels and premiering our film “Chameleon Corridors”, Wildscreen was a huge success! 

Here’s a quick breakdown in numbers: 

• 221 guests from 20 countries 

• 12 incredible sessions of content 

• 43 expert speakers 

• 1 African made, natural history film premiered with a live audience of 400+ 

• $19,000 awarded to 3 wild pitch winners

Expanding our reach: community screenings in the Serengeti 

Later in the month, we joined Nomad Tanzania, a leading ethical and sustainable tour operator to engage communities living within the Serengeti ecosystem by showcasing our films and facilitating important conservation conversations. 

We showcased our film, Ashura, the Courageous Young Woman, which tells the tale of an inspiring young woman who is tackling human-wildlife conflict as one of the first female conservation rangers in the area showing young women in these schools to see that they too can take on pioneering roles within their communities to promote environmental conservation.

The filmmaking scene in Tanzania and Africa at large is getting bigger and better. And this month, our mentees join a world-leading film crew in Botswana so make sure you keep your eyes peeled for updates on that.
