Welcome to our July newsletter. The past two months have brought inspiring stories and new experiences from across Africa, from a continent-wide Photo Competition to the Expedition Filmmaking Workshop and Wildscreen Festival in Botswana. You will also get to hear from one of our alumni whose experience shows the impact of learning and growing with AFRISOS. Keep reading and explore their stories.

Can a single image shift how we see climate action? Four months ago, in partnership with GreenManjaro and with support from the Pulitzer Center, we launched the “Climate Through Young Eyes” photo competition, inviting Africans of all ages to submit photographs that capture the beauty and urgency of sustainable actions as seen through the eyes of the next generation.

We received hundreds of photographs from over 20 African countries, each one capturing the urgency, hope, and beauty of climate action. After careful and thoughtful judgement, we are excited to introduce the winning storytellers: Birembano Grabriel (Democratic Republic of Congo) - First Prize, Suleiman Nimbag (Ghana) - Second Prize, Mohammed Alamin (Nigeria) - Third Prize and Innocent Msoka (Tanzania) - People’s Choice Award with 3,666 votes.

Their work was celebrated during the Kili Kids for Climate Festival held in Tanzania on May 23–24. Each winner received a cash prize, and their photographs are now featured on our social media platforms. To all the participants, thank you for your vision.

Just before June came to a close, AFRISOS, in partnership with The Wilderness Project and Wildscreen, hosted a 10-day Expedition Filmmaking Workshop in Maun, Botswana, held just days before the inauguration of Wildscreen Botswana.

Led by industry mentors Jigar Ganatra, Johann Vorster, Simi Nickmanova and Tebogo Phalane, the all-expenses-paid workshop brought together five emerging storytellers from across the continent: Hamis Khalfan (Tanzania), Basezana D. R. Monyamane (Botswana), Pauline Kyalo (Kenya), Rufusiah Molefe (Botswana) and Wrightwel Nyirenda (Zambia).

Together, they created five original short films rooted in community-driven nature storytelling and proudly screened their work to over 165 international delegates at the Wildscreen Festival in Botswana.

Meet Ngamburiro Charity Mutumbwa, a talented videographer, photographer, and filmmaker from Namibia and one of our proud AFRISOS alumni.

Ngamburiro took part in our Expedition Filmmaking Workshop in Kavango, Namibia, in February 2025, an experience she calls life-changing. Her assignment was to make a 90-second micro-documentary with the theme “connection to water.” Equipped with a Sony FX6 cinema film kit and the knowledge on story craft gained from her mentors, she collaborated with her film contributor really successfully to create The Floating Desk.

“This was more than a workshop; I gained friends for life, I gained mentors for life, I gained knowledge for years to come within this industry.”
